Parliament Session
Day 4 Live of the 2024 Parliamentary Session of the Lok Sabha: Today, President Droupadi Murmu delivers her first speech to a joint session of Parliament following the creation of the third National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Both Houses of Parliament will discuss a motion of thanks once she finishes her speech.
Today in parliament session the Rajya Sabha began, while the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha convened on Monday. On Wednesday, a motion proposed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and seconded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was approved by voice vote, re-electing Om Birla as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Birla urged the 18th Lok Sabha to build high parliamentary traditions and dignity, as well as to be a hub of innovative thinking and fresh ideas. She also asked for a new vision and resolve for the House. He stated that the House’s goal has to be to realize Viksit Bharat’s commitment.
In her speech to Parliament Session today, President Murmu expressed gratitude to the Election Commission of India on behalf of millions of Indians. “This was the biggest election in the world,” she said, highlighting the most recent elections. Amidst strikes and shutdowns, Murmu reported a notable increase in voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir, shattering long-standing records. She emphasized that, in contrast to what some people may think, the strong turnout in the Kashmir valley demonstrated that “Kashmir gave a befitting reply to all such forces.”
Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla sparked a contentious debate during the maiden on parliament session of the House on Wednesday by calling the declaration of emergency in 1975 a “dark day in the history” of India. Congressmen criticized Birla’s comments as “unfortunate” and demonstrated with signs. As opposition lawmakers chastised the speaker’s position, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP MPs backed it, forcing Birla to adjourn the House in the midst of the heated argument.
Today also AAP MP Sandeep Pathak in parliament session declared that the party would boycott the President’s speech and hold a protest in the Rajya Sabha against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Pathak denounced what he called “dictatorial under the guise of justice,” stressing the primacy of the President and the Constitution. He clarified that the AAP has chosen to skip the President’s speech in Parliament, even if the issue was not discussed with other parties in the INDIA alliance.
On July 2-3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address Parliament in response to the continuing discussion on the motion of thanks. It is expected that President Droupadi Murmu will present a comprehensive assessment of the policies implemented by the central government during the last 10 years, emphasizing successes in the areas of social welfare, healthcare, education, defense, and the economy.
