Parliament Election
New Delhi: Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress will face Om Birla of the BJP for the position of Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. The opposition and the center were unable to come to an agreement, which made the vote for the Speaker position necessary. For the position, this will be the first vote since 1952.
Congress’s choice, K Suresh, is an eight-term MP from Kerala’s Mavelikara, while BJP’s Om Birla is a three-time MP from Rajasthan’s Kota and the Speaker of the previous Lok Sabha.
The number of MPs in attendance and participating will be considered when casting votes for the Speaker position. The Speaker will be chosen by the majority. With 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the NDA holds a resounding majority with the opposition India bloc having 234 MPs.
Lok Sabha Speaker Election: Live Updates for Day 3 of the Parliament Session Om Birla, the BJP’s nominee, was chosen to serve as Speaker of the Lok Sabha once more. With the numbers working in the ruling coalition’s favor, the NDA nominee was set to hold onto the Speaker position. Om Birla was congratulated by Congressman Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Modi after the victory, and they both led him to the Speaker’s chair.
According to PM Modi, the new members of the Lok Sabha should be motivated by Birla’s achievements as a lawmaker. “On behalf of the entire House, let me congratulate you and look forward to working under your leadership for the ensuing five years. The whole House is cheered by your lovely smile,” he remarked. K Suresh, a candidate for the Congress, faced Birla when the ruling party and the opposition were unable to come to an agreement last night.
Why couldn’t NDA and Opposition agree on anything? In an attempt to reach an agreement on Om Birla’s nomination, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke with Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and president of the Congress, as well as other opposition figures on Monday night. Congress sources claim that when Kharge brought up the Deputy Speaker during their conversation, he was told it could be dealt with early on Tuesday. But without addressing the Deputy Speaker problem, the ruling party asked for signatures on Birla’s candidacy papers shortly before Tuesday’s noon deadline for Speaker candidates.
