The wait for Vinesh Phogat has merely prolonged.
The popular wrestler from India filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after being banned for being 100 grams overweight from the women’s 50 kg wrestling final at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In her appeal to CAS, Vinesh claimed that she should have received a shared silver medal because she had qualified for the final under the allowed weight limit. But the case’s verdict date has already been postponed a few times.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) postponed wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic silver medal verdict date on Wednesday. The decision has been postponed for the second time, despite initial statements that it will be made before the 2024 Paris Olympics.
August 10 was the original date for the CAS verdict; however, it was later rescheduled for August 13. The revised date of the verdict is August 16.
French attorneys Charles Amson, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim, and Joelle Monlouis, who represents Vinesh, assisted her and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in submitting the application. They are taking care of the matter pro gratis, having been given to her by the Paris Bar.
Senior attorneys Vidushpat Singhania and Harish Salve were also brought in to assist her with the lawsuit.
Prior to the case’s August 13 verdict date, Singhania provided an explanation of why the CAS’s protracted deliberation is a positive development.
“Everyone has faith. Indeed, there is a 24-hour time limit for the CAS’s ad hoc panel. They are taking his case seriously, as evidenced by the multiple extensions of the verdict date. It’s beneficial for us if the Arbitrator, lady, is considering it, Vidushpat Singhania told India Today.
He was forthright enough to point out that CAS cases frequently do not provide satisfactory outcomes.
Can Phogat benefit from a delayed verdict?
In the past, I have contested numerous instances at the CAS. At CAS, the success rate is quite low. We are requesting a historic ruling in this case from the arbitrator. It’s a little challenging, but let’s hope a significant development occurs,” he continued.
Let us all offer prayers for Vinesh. Hopefully, she receives a medal. She is a champion even if she doesn’t understand,” Singhania remarked.
