The objective of this program is to train more than 600 women employees. The training covers a variety of self-defense techniques, including punches, elbow strikes, blocks, eye attacks, and avoidance of hair and hand holds. Participants are also learning how to use everyday objects as improvised weapons, so they can be prepared to deal with potential threats.
This program covers not only medical professionals but also non-medical staff. Administrative staff Pooja said she feels safe at work because of the hospital’s measures, but women’s safety remains a widespread concern. Nursing staff member Mamta Bhatia said the training has boosted her confidence and she plans to teach these self-defense skills to her daughters.
Dr. Barkha Yadav of Fortis Hospital said that she feels safe in the hospital premises and while going home, because security arrangements have been increased. The initiative has been enthusiastically embraced by employees, who are eager to learn how to protect themselves. Delhi Police constable Poonam, who was leading the training, stressed the importance of learning basic tactics and punches to neutralize threats. She said that in today’s world, it is important for every girl and woman to know how to protect themselves.
Subhadra, Administrative Staff Member, Fortis Hospital, highlighted that while the hospital has taken steps to ensure the safety of women employees, it is equally important to empower them with self-defense skills. He said the training program is a proactive step towards self-empowerment, and he was glad to see the eagerness of employees to participate.
After this incident, a national task force has been formed following the order of the Supreme Court. The task force held its first meeting in Delhi on Wednesday to discuss recommendations for the safety, security and working conditions of medical professionals.
