A Japan Airlines aircraft carrying hundreds of people crashed into an earthquake relief aircraft on Tuesday, igniting a fire that killed five people as it touched down at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
There were fatalities on the second aircraft, operated by the Japan Coast Guard, but all 379 passengers on JAL flight 516, including eight children under the age of two, were safely evacuated from the passenger plane, the airline reported.
At 5:46 p.m. local time (3:46 a.m. ET), the Airbus A350-900 aircraft caught fire after landing at Haneda from Sapporo in northern Japan. The plane caught fire, and as it did, footage showed a massive fireball shooting out and spreading down the runway.
On the second aircraft, a De, five crew members perished.
Japan Airlines senior vice president of corporate safety and security Tadayuki Tsutsumi told reporters that the airline is cooperating with the investigation to find the cause of the fatal crash. According to a statement from the French aviation agency, as part of the investigation team established by the Japan Transport Safety Board, it is also sending its own investigators to Tokyo to look into the collision.
Japan Airlines said in a later statement that air traffic control had given the crew the all-clear to land prior to the collision. The crew can be heard reading back a clearance order for runway 34 in the audio from LiveATC.net, stating, “cleared to land 34 right.”
Interviews with the operating crew revealed that they confirmed and reiterated air traffic control’s landing authorization, and
As we prepared to take off, there was a loud bang in the window seat of another aircraft I was in.
“A massive trail of flames was visible to us from our windows as it traveled down the runway.
“We watched fire engines pass by the runway as the flames grew higher and higher.”
When word of the accident broke, Mika Yamake was en route to the airport to meet her husband, who was traveling on the JAL aircraft.
He told me he saw smoke coming out when he called me from inside. That he was safe pleased me. He just took his cell phone out. He was forced to abandon everything else.
When the plane landed, Mika’s husband, Satoshi Yamake, told CNN that he didn’t feel strange at first.
After being pulled from the wreckage, Yamake told CNN at Haneda airport, “We landed normally, didn’t feel a shock or anything.”
He continued by saying that he had witnessed a fire just before the plane was ordered to evacuate.
However, I thought it odd when we noticed fire coming from the engines. As I was wondering why the fire had been going so long, Yamake announced, “We probably hit something on the runway and we have to evacuate the plane right now.” “Passengers weren’t panicking too much, but we could smell some smoke.”
What is the size of an Airbus A350-900?
According to Japan Airlines, the aircraft that caught fire at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport following a collision with another aircraft was carrying 367 passengers and 12 crew members. On the Japan Coast Guard plane, five people lost their lives, while the commercial plane suffered injuries from 17 passengers.
