One of the main acts at the recent fest of Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Haryanvi singer Ajay Hooda, was ordered to end his performance.
Heard or seen barriers being breached or walls being climbed during Delhi University’s college fest? However, the lathis (sticks) charged at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College were the star of the show!
So much so that Haryanvi artist Ajay Hooda’s star act had to be shortened. Disappointed because they felt like they were watching a concert joke, many took to social media to vent their frustration. That’s what happened on Thursday at Tide, the ARSD annual cultural festival, as a few students brandishing lathis got into fights and mayhem ensued.
A member of the college’s cultural club and a final-year BSc (Prog) Industrial Chemistry student, Janhvi Kataria recalls, “Things got so heated up that the entire fest was on the verge of cancellation.” While the fashion show was going on, a group of boys stormed into the main stage area brandishing lathis. The celebration came to a sudden end when they grabbed the host’s microphone and interrupted the broadcast.
When Hooda eventually made his way into campus at approximately 6:40 p.m., the college administration and the on-site police officers had managed to get the situation under control. When reports of hooliganism increased after 7 o’clock in the evening, the singer mounted the stage, but he quickly ended it since the college administration thought it would be preferable for him to leave the campus early.
Deepankar, an assistant professor in the history department and the chair of the Help Desk Committee, states, “We asked Mr. Hooda to wrap up his performance before it was supposed to end, to ensure no untoward incident occurs.” “There was a crowd of over 20,000 and it was getting difficult to manage them.”Hooda’s performance, which lasted only thirty minutes, inspired stories and memes on social media after a number of students labeled it as a “prank.”

“I was really let down when he didn’t complete his set. My friends and I felt deceived, says Tanushika Chaudhary, a first-year BA (Hons) English student at ARSD. She continues, “We moved as soon as he left, which is fortunate because I heard later that some students became very irate and started running towards the stage and even broke barricades in between.”
When his manager Ravi got in touch with the singer’s entourage, he confirmed that the singer’s stage act was shortened at the request of the authorities. “According to the agreement, he was to perform for approximately 45 minutes,” he stated. He ended the performance, though, and we left the college after the college and police officials told us to wind down when there were still 20 minutes and eight or ten songs remaining.
