The hunt is on to name India’s men’s cricket team’s next head coach.
After the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, one well-known individual—MS Dhoni—will step down as coach, and he is not qualified to replace him. The reason? The candidate needs to have given up on competitive play in all its forms.
Even though Dhoni retired from international cricket back in 2020, he is still playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, thus he cannot be selected as the head coach.
Being the most popular cricket player in India, Dhoni’s selection as Team India’s new coach drew a lot of positive feedback on social media. This does not, however, preclude Dhoni from playing for the team. It’s important to remember that at the UAE-hosted 2021 T20 World Cup, he acted as a consultant to the Indian team. India’s performance in the previous group stages was poor.
It is also improbable that Dhoni will retire after the 2024 Indian Premier League given his present form and lack of indications that he is planning to do so. This year, in 11 innings, he has struck out more than 220 times and been removed just three times. The head coach position’s application period opens on Monday.
Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been floated as a potential candidate following his team’s recent third IPL victory. The identities of Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming have also been floated in the rumor mill. However, the BCCI has not yet released the whole list of nominees.
India’s search for a new head coach of men’s cricket is underway.
However, whenever Rahul Dravid resigns following the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, one well-known figure—MS Dhoni—is ineligible to take over as coach. The cause? All applicants must have retired from competitive play in all formats. Dhoni cannot be chosen to be the head coach because he is still playing in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings, even though he will retire from international cricket in 2020.
As the most well-known cricket player in India, Dhoni received a good deal of support on social media for his appointment as Team India’s new coach.
This does not, however, rule out Dhoni’s possible participation with the squad. It’s crucial to keep in mind that he served as an advisor to the Indian team at the UAE-hosted 2021 T20 World Cup. India has failed miserably in the group rounds that previous time.
Additionally, given his current form, there is no indication that Dhoni will retire after the 2024 Indian Premier League. He only had three out of eleven innings of being removed this year while scoring at a strike rate of over 220.
Who is the front-runner to take over as India’s head coach?
The India head coach position was open for applications till Monday. For candidates to apply, BCCI has made a public Google form available. Over three thousand applications were submitted.
According to the Indian Express, a large number of the applications were fraudulent, showing phony names for Sachin Tendulkar, Amit Shah, the home minister, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been mentioned as a possible candidate after winning the IPL for the third time recently. Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming have also been mentioned in rumors.
The BCCI has not yet made public the complete list of applicants, though.
The BCCI has asked the famous MS Dhoni for assistance in convincing Stephen Fleming to accept the position of head coach of the India men’s cricket team, as the application deadline for the position draws near.
Fleming has been the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings for the longest period of time. He has been involved with the team since the IPL’s founding in 2008. He has developed a strong relationship with Dhoni and oversaw their run to five IPL championships throughout this time.
The BCCI is hoping that Dhoni’s close relationship with them will persuade the former captain of New Zealand to submit his application for the position, as the board is apparently eager for him to take over for Rahul Dravid.

Fleming, however, is concerned about his par because the contract, which runs through 2027, requires him to travel for the most of the year.
A BCCI source told Hindustan Times, “Fleming hasn’t said no.”
In spite of his coaching responsibilities for four different T20 teams throughout the world, Fleming still finds time for his family.

The BCCI is now attempting to engage Dhoni in an attempt to persuade Fleming that CSK should not make it to the IPL playoffs.
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
