Kolkata:
Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual employee of Kolkata Police, is accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of raping and killing a female doctor who was on duty at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. At a special court in Sealdah this afternoon, the central agency will present the chargesheet.
Officials stated that the doctor had taken a break and gone to rest in the hospital’s lecture room when the accused civic volunteer allegedly committed the crime.
According to CBI officials, the charge sheet that names Roy as the primary accused contains the statements of over 200 people. They said that the question of whether there were more suspects and whether this was an instance of gang rape is still being investigated.
The trauma the doctor had experienced was made clear by the investigations conducted after her body was discovered dead at the hospital on August 9. Amid widespread protests, the court had requested the CBI to assume control of the investigation.
Roy was taken into custody by Kolkata Police one day after he started visiting the hospital. When they took over, they turned him over to the CBI along with additional evidence.
In two separate instances of financial irregularities and evidence tampering, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI have also detained Sandip Ghosh, the college’s former principal.
