Political unrest is returning to Bihar as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to re-join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which he abandoned in 2022 to create a coalition with the opposition known as “Mahagathbandhan.”
The coalition between Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) in Bihar appears to be breaking down, according to a number of NDA leaders, including former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

Yesterday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU and his erstwhile ally, the BJP, may rekindle their relationship after senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushil Kumar Modi stated that the door can be opened if necessary.
There are enough signs, according to Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (RLJD) president Upendra Kushwaha on Friday, indicating Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is anxious and unsettled within the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance), and the leader of the JDU may be considering leaving the group.
The chief of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Chirag Paswan, also mentioned that there is agitation in the state and that it will take some time to determine whether the JDU, led by Nitish Kumar, will realign with the NDA, led by the BJP.

A glimpse into Nitish Kumar's political past:
In coalition with the BJP, Nitish Kumar initially formed a government in 2005. After severing relations in 2013, he ran unopposed in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and in coalition with the RJD in the 2015 assembly elections. 2017 saw his comeback to NDA. As part of the BJP-led alliance, Kumar’s JD(U) ran in the 2020 Bihar elections as well as the 2019 national elections. However, Kumar left the NDA in 2022 in order to reorganize the government with the Left, RJD, and Congress.
Regarding the current state of the Bihar assembly, the NDA has 82 members and the JD(U) has 45 in the 243-member assembly. There are 114 legislators from the RJD, Congress, and Left parties. With 79 MLAs, the RJD is the single largest party.
