The results of the biennial elections held on Friday for 11 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council revealed that at least seven Congress MLAs voted in defiance of party instructions.
Party sources said the Congress, which has 37 MLAs, had fixed a quota of 30 first preference votes for its candidate Pradyuman Satav and the remaining seven votes were to be given to ally Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Milind Narvekar.
Ultimately, Satav got 25 first preference votes and Narvekar 22, which meant that at least seven Congress MLAs cross-voted. The ruling Mahayuti alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP won all its nine seats, while Jayant Patil of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), supported by Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), lost.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve said, “Nothing wrong has happened in the MLC elections. Our votes were intact and no one did cross voting. We are definitely happy with Jayant Patil’s defeat.” No. But we do not think that the MVA votes have gone in favor of the ruling party.”
