livendtv Delhi Heavy Rain Update 2024:-Delhi received continuous rain with strong winds on Friday, signaling the beginning of a rainy weekend. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’, advising residents to remain alert as more rain is expected in the coming days.
The heaviest rainfall was recorded at SPS Mayur Vihar, where 66 mm of rain was recorded between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. Heaviest rainfall occurred in the afternoon, with 37.5 mm rainfall between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm and 28 mm rainfall between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm.
Safdarjung, a major weather station in Delhi, recorded 3.4 mm rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Other areas recorded varying amounts of rainfall: Delhi University recorded 11.5 mm, Ridge 11.3 mm and Lodhi Road 8.6 mm. Additional rain by evening increased the total rainfall, with Safdarjung recording 17.4 mm, Palam 30.1 mm and Najafgarh 39 mm till 8:30 pm.
A weather department official said two cyclonic circulations – one over south-eastern Uttar Pradesh and the other over north-eastern Rajasthan – and an active monsoon trough near normal conditions are likely to cause widespread rainfall over the weekend. The IMD estimates that rain will continue throughout the weekend, with widespread light to moderate rain expected across North India. Notably, the heaviest rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan, while scattered rainfall is forecast over Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and West Rajasthan.
Although the intensity of rain may reduce by Monday, light rain may occur on August 12 and 13. Another round of rain is expected on August 14 and 15.
The Meteorological Department has warned that due to continuous rain, there may be some disruption in traffic, the possibility of vehicle accidents may increase and water logging in low-lying areas may occur. Residents are advised to check traffic congestion and follow advisories issued.
After torrential rains on Friday evening, waterlogging and traffic problems were seen in some areas of Delhi. The PWD control room received 10 calls about the floods, with most of the problems resolved immediately. Flood-affected roads near Anand Parvat and Mundka were cleared by quick response teams and there was no waterlogging in underpasses. The MCD reported 15 calls from areas including Sonia Vihar, Mahavir Enclave in Palam, Kamala Nagar and Tagore Garden.
