The torrential rains, which led to record rainfall in parts of the city, prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Delhi. The IMD advised residents to stay indoors, secure their homes and avoid unnecessary travel.
Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced late on Wednesday night that all schools in the city will remain closed on August 1.
Commuters described massive traffic chaos not only in Delhi but also on the Delhi-Noida Expressway. In the national capital, commuters on the Mehrauli-Chhatarpur route were claimed to be stranded on the road for over one and a half hours due to heavy rains. Similarly, long queues of vehicles were seen on the DND flyway from Noida in Uttar Pradesh to Moolchand in Delhi.
Traffic was particularly disorganized in Lutyens’ Delhi and on roads leading to Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. Old Rajinder Nagar, where students were protesting the death of three UPSC aspirants in the basement of a flooded coaching institute, was submerged in knee-deep water. In Connaught Place, many showrooms and restaurants were flooded.

In north Delhi’s Sabji Mandi area, a house collapsed near Robin Cinema, injuring one person, while in Vasant Kunj, a woman was injured when a wall collapsed due to heavy rains. Due to heavy rain overnight in Noida, many underpasses were flooded. Two people died when the wall collapsed. Three people died of electrocution after a faulty wire fell on a water-logged road at IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram.
