Delhi Airport Roof Collapse
New Delhi: This morning’s torrential rain caused a section of Terminal 1 (T1)’s roof to collapse on cars, resulting in at least one fatality and six injuries. According to the civil aviation ministry, all departures from Terminal 1, which only operates domestic flights, have been temporarily come to a standstill.
The Delhi Airport Terminal 1 sunshade collapsed due to heavy rain in the early hours of today. Flights to and from Terminal 1 have been suspended till further notice as a result. For the planes to run smoothly, other measures are being prepared,” the ministry stated in a statement on X.
During visit to the airport of Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu examined Terminal 1. According to him, Terminals 2 and 3 would temporarily host the airport’s activities.
The recently elected minister described the occurrence as “very serious” and said that an extensive examination of the airport’s structure would be conducted. He stated that the probe would reveal the incident’s technical causes as well as other details. He further declared that the injured would receive ₹ 3 lakh each, while the relatives of the victim would receive ₹ 20 lakh.
Mr. Naidu responded, “It is too early to comment on it,” when reporters pointed out that some of the beams appeared to have accumulated rust. The airport management has been instructed to investigate. The DGCA and the ministry will each conduct an independent investigation.”
The terminal 1 canopy, which fell today, was constructed between 2008 and 2009. Government sources told NDTV that GMR hired private contractors to complete the work.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi allegedly opened the impacted terminal, according to claims made by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shortly after the event that occurred in the morning. “Corruption and criminal negligence is responsible for the collapse of shoddy infrastructure falling like a deck of cards, in the past 10 years of the Modi government,” said Mr. Kharge.
The “misinformation” in Mr. Kharge’s article was called out by the Civil Aviation Minister, who noted that PM Modi had actually opened a different structure, not terminal 1. When the canopy was constructed and opened, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), led by Congress, was in charge.
Only Indigo and SpiceJet operate domestic flights on T1. There are three terminals at the airport—T1, T2, and T3 with 1,400 airplane movements every day.
4 automobiles that were parked in the pick-up and drop section of the terminal at the busiest airport in the world, Indira Gandhi International Airport, were damaged by the fall of the roof sheet and support beams, according to the officials. At about 5:30 in the morning, the incident was reported to Delhi Fire Services (DFS).
A man was observed being removed from a car where an iron beam had fallen during the rescue efforts.
Due to a roof collapse at Delhi Airport Spice Jet and Indigo flights are canceled
According to Indigo, Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport sustained structural damage, which affected its ability to operate flights. According to a statement from the budget airline, “passengers are not able to enter the terminal,” which has resulted in flight cancellations in Delhi.
“Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives,” a representative for Indigo stated.
“The network’s overall operations have also been disrupted by this unforeseen circumstance. Before heading to the airport, customers are urged to check and confirm the status of their flights,” the statement continued The airline advised its customers to “keep a watch on our Social Media channels for further updates.”
