Tradition and importance
Republic Day honors the January 26, 1950, ratification of the Indian Constitution. India declared independent of the British Raj in 1947, but it wasn’t until January 26, 1950, that the country was formally proclaimed a republic and the Indian Constitution went into force.
After the Constituent Assembly met for the first time on December 9, 1946, and the last time on November 26, 1949, the Constitution was ratified the following year. India observes Constitution Day on this day in honor of Dr. BR Ambedkar, who chaired the Constitution’s Drafting Committee.
Republic Day honors the essence of India’s independence since it was on this day in 1930 that the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj, or freedom from colonial authority. India celebrates Republic Day as a national holiday to remember the adoption of the Indian Constitution and to honor the democratic right of its citizens to pick their government.
