In both his debut game and his 100th outing, Ravichandran Ashwin became the first bowler in the history of the game to take a fifer. Additionally, the off-spinner tied a unique record set by Muttiah Muralidharan.
At the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took the field for the first time in his 100 Test matches for his nation against England. With his fifer in the second innings, the 37-year-old not only exceeded expectations in his 100th Test match performance, but he even went one step further and broke a record that had stood for 137 years.
In summary, Ashwin took four wickets in the first innings and five in the second to severely disrupt the English batting in both innings of the Dharamshala Test. Ben Foakes was removed from the game when Ashwin removed his middle and leg stumps, completing his 36th 5-wicket haul.
With his outstanding effort in his 100th Test, Ashwin tied Muttiah Muralidharnan for the highest numbers in a match involving 100 Tests, surpassing both Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev. In his 100th Test, the Sri Lankan spinner concluded with scores of 9/141, while Ashwin concluded with 9/118.
In addition, the off-spinner made history by being the first bowler to take a fifer in both his 100th Test and inaugural match. The cricketer, who was born in Tamil Nadu, made his debut in 2011 against the West Indies, taking three wickets in the first innings and six in the second.
Ashwin evaluates his Dharamshala Test performance:
During the post-match news conference, Ashwin discussed his performance, saying, “I don’t hold back if I am confident that I can try something.” I have been alert and receptive to constructive criticism. I will never be able to learn unless I try. I’m not suggesting using a single approach won’t be effective. But happily, I’ve benefited from my experiments and learning.”

It makes me really pleased. I find it difficult to describe how I’m feeling at the moment. Many congratulations ahead of the 100th Test. I have experimented with various motions, speeds, and releases along the series. India is unique, with difficulties on every hand. The experienced spinner continued, “I was really pleased with the way the ball came out, especially with this performance and the second innings in Ranchi.”
