Bengaluru:
An FIR against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for alleged extortion through the now-canceled electoral bonds scheme has been issued by a Bengaluru Special Court. Adarsh Iyer of the Janaadhikara Sangharsha Sanghatane (JSP) lodged the complaint, alleging that Ms. Sitharaman and her associates were involved in a scheme of extortion disguised as electoral bonds.
Nirmala Sitharaman, JP Nadda, the president of the BJP, Naleen Kumar Kateel, and BY Vijayendra, the leaders of the Karnataka BJP, are all named in a complaint that was filed in Bengaluru. Citing Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids as a means of coercion, the complaint claims that business organizations were forced to pay thousands of crores for electoral bonds. It is alleged that national and state BJP officials cashed in on these electoral bonds.
The accusation alleges that Ms. Sitharaman and other prominent BJP leaders participated in the electoral bonds scheme, which made it easier for money laundering to occur for political purposes.
The BJP has defended Nirmala Sitharaman, distancing itself from the allegations. The party argued that the charges are politically motivated and that the electoral bonds issue is a policy matter, not a criminal one. The BJP also attacked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the ongoing MUDA case.
Under pressure from a FIR in the ongoing Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land allotment case, Mr. Siddaramaiah questioned why high-ranking officials like Ms. Sitharaman and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy—who is also being investigated for corruption—are not being asked to step down. He stated that Ms. Sitharaman and other BJP leaders who are the subject of FIRs should be held to the same standards if he is expected to resign down.
How FM Nirmala Sitharaman may simplify this interim budget for taxpayers.
Due to the purportedly unlawful distribution of MUDA sites, the Lokayukta police have filed a formal complaint against Mr. Siddaramaiah, his spouse, and more family members.
The government has made significant progress in the last two to three years in streamlining the filing and processing of tax returns by providing pre-filled forms and taxpayer data via the AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS. Instead of offering large tax relief, save for a select few, the Finance Minister’s focus in the interim budget may only be on making structural adjustments for taxpayers’ ease of operation.
The police are to file a formal complaint (FIR) against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for allegedly utilizing electoral bonds for “extortion,” as ordered by a special court in Bengaluru. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court struck down the electoral bonds program, citing constitutional violations and RTI violations.
After considering a request from the Karnataka-based NGO Janaadhikaara Sangharsha Parishath, the Special Court for People’s Representatives instructed Bengaluru police to file a formal complaint (FIR) alleging extortion against the finance minister and several other individuals. The case will be heard by the court again on October 10.
‘extortion’ case involving electoral bonds against Nirmala Sitharaman.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court declared that the electoral bonds program for financing political parties was unconstitutional since it contravened both Article 19 (1) (a) and the Right to Information Act. The Supreme Court of India ordered the State Bank of India to cease issuing electoral bonds and release donor information.
It was revealed that the Bharatiya Janata Party was the recipient of the largest number of donations under the scheme, and that central agencies were investigating a few of its donors. The BJP reportedly collected donations of Rs 6,986.5 crore via the bonds.
