Vinesh ended Yui Susaki’s 82-game undefeated run with an impressive 3-2 win over the reigning Olympic and world champion. After defeating world No. 7 Ukrainian Ostava Livach in the quarterfinals, Phogat also defeated Cuba’s Eusnelis Guzmán López 5–0 to reach the wrestling final in Paris. “Got to bring gold,” Vinesh told her teary-eyed mother Premlata in a quick video call after the historic encounter. On Day 12 of the Paris Games, Vinesh will fight for the gold against American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt tonight.
The stage is also set for Mirabai Chanu as the Tokyo silver medalist weightlifter will begin her campaign in Paris. Chanu’s entry weight for the Paris Games is 200 kg. After her stellar performance in Tokyo, Chanu has lifted more than 200 kg only once. China’s defending champion Zhihui leads in Paris. Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain missed out on a medal as she was defeated 4:1 by China’s Li Qian in the women’s 75 kg category at the ongoing Paris Olympics. Speaking at the press conference at India House, Borgohain said that he was not at all happy after being eliminated from the boxing event. “It wasn’t what I expected. I’m not happy because I didn’t achieve what I thought of achieving here. But I have to accept it. Hopefully next time I’ll be stronger,” Lovlina said.
