Kolkata:
One month has passed since a 31-year-old physician was discovered murdered after being sexually assaulted in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar hall in Kolkata. Nationwide indignation has been triggered by the occurrence, and large-scale demonstrations calling for justice in the case have taken place throughout Bengal. The government lead by Mamata Banerjee has come under fire for how it has handled the matter and has been charged with trying to cover up and protecting the perpetrators.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was given the delicate case by the Calcutta High Court a few days after the occurrence, on a petition by the parents of the victims. However, other from Sanjay Roy, no additional arrests have been made in the rape-murder case in almost four weeks after the central agency assumed control of the investigation. Roy was a civic volunteer who frequently visited the case; a day after the occurrence, Kolkata Police detained him, and the CBI later brought him into jail. Due to suspected financial irregularities at the hospital, the CBI has detained three people, including Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-run facility.
A CBI official has provided news agency PTI with information regarding some of the obstacles that have arisen throughout the investigation of this horrific case.
According to the CBI officer, the inquiry has been hampered by their inability to connect multiple dots because of a dearth of evidence from the crime scene. The central agency discovered that on August 10, the day after the body was discovered, Dr. Ghosh gave the order to demolish a toilet and a restroom next to the lecture room. According to the CBI officer, there is a possibility that important pieces of evidence were destroyed during the area’s demolition by the Public Works Department.
The Scene of the Crime?
A video that circulated on social media shortly after the victim’s body was discovered showed the lecture room full of people. After the mob violence in the hospital on August 14, concerns were also raised about whether the crime scene was tainted.
Nonetheless, Kolkata Police have emphasized that the crime scene was undamaged. “A video demonstrating the location of the incident has gone viral. This provides clarification. One section of the lecture hall contained the body that was discovered there. The room was roped off for forty feet. A spokeswoman for the Kolkata Police had stated, “The video is not inside the area that has been cordoned off, where family members, medical professionals, and law enforcement were present.
Before the mob violence, the police had declared the crime scene to be unharmed and issued a warning against disseminating false information.

The parents of the victim had expressed their suspicions of gangrape in their appeal to the Calcutta High Court. Additionally, they have claimed that the crime scene and the evidence were altered.
“We discovered a number of individuals inside the lecture hall, one police officer stationed at the entrance, and numerous others waiting outside when we arrived there (after her passing). It is likely that every element of the scene was meticulously set up. The victim’s mother stated, “The scene could not be so, given the brutality of the crime.”
According to him, there was a match between Roy and the victim’s DNA.
The CBI officer said that the probe was hampered by a lack of proof. “In this instance, there is insufficient proof. Our investigators are unable to draw a conclusion because of this. Multiple people were not involved in the woman’s sexual assault, according to DNA evidence, circumstantial evidence, and interviews with people, the official told PTI.
The CFSL report was further supported, according to the official, by independent DNA profiling of samples taken from Roy and the victim and by comparing the DNA with other evidence taken from the crime scene. However, Sanjoy Roy’s attorney has claimed that his client was set up to protect the real offenders.
The rape and murder case inquiry has uncovered significant wrongdoing in the hospital and unleashed a bag of worms. The CBI official stated they have located more names, even though Mr. Ghosh and three other people have been arrested. He stated, “More people were involved in the irregularities which were carried out in a well-planned manner,” and that there weren’t always obvious signs of financial misbehavior.During Dr. Ghosh’s stint as principal from 2022 to 2023, the central agency told a court that he was responsible for 84 unlawful appointments and had a significant part in the embezzlement of funds. The claimed financial irregularities are being looked into concurrently by the Enforcement Directorate. It has been discovered that the former principal has an opulent bungalow with his spouse.
