Jalebis for Gandhi Rahul. Jalebis in support of Congress.
After a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, the BJP’s Haryana branch sent Congress MP Rahul Gandhi a kilogram of the fried sweet dish to his Delhi office in celebration of winning an unprecedented third straight Assembly election. However, the gesture is not one of goodwill or deference to a vanquished opponent. Rather, it was a triumphant jab at his remark about jalebis from Gohana in Haryana.
Jalebis have been sent to Rahul Gandhi’s residence on behalf of all Bhartiya Janta Party workers (in) Haryana, the party announced on X. A screenshot from a food delivery app verifying that Mr. Gandhi had placed an order for sweets and chaat from a Delhi-based business was attached. The delivery address that appeared was the Congress headquarters, 24 Akbar Road in Delhi.
While campaigning Mr Gandhi spoke about jalebis from the area being mass made and distributed across the country, as well as being exported, to generate jobs and cash.
He said that the center’s Goods and Services Tax, or GST, system had harmed jalebi vendors.
The remarks drew (predictably so) jibes from BJP leaders who declared Mr Gandhi ‘clueless’ about how the sweet dish is prepared. “I also like Gohana jalebi… but one has to understand how they are made and are sold,” stated former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The BJP veteran stated Mr Gandhi “does not do his homework properly”.
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made use of jalebis in a campaign address prior to the April–June general election, following in the footsteps of Mr. Gandhi.
A delicious retaliation: following Congress workers’ and Rahul Gandhi’s historic victory in Haryana, the BJP demands one kilogram of “jalebi” for them.
Using the jalebi, Mr. Modi made an apparent unsupported statement alleging that the opposition INDIA group intended to replace the Prime Minister every year if they were elected.
“Ask them – is Prime Minister’s post our Matu Ram ki jalebi?” he demanded. Gohana jalebis were first made in 1958, when a local businessman called Matu Ram began selling it. His grandsons now manage his company.

Each jalebi weighs about 250 grams and is prepared entirely of pure desi ghee. It is crunchy but soft. Approximately one kilogram of the four pieces weighs ₹ 320, according to one of the grandchildren, Raman Gupta, who spoke to PTI.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) purchased one kilogram of jalebi for Congress MP and LoP Rahul Gandhi, as well as party workers, following their overwhelming victory in the Haryana assembly elections. The BJP’s Haryana branch shared a post on ‘X’ with the caption, “Jalebi has been delivered to Rahul Gandhi’s home on behalf of all the workers of Bhartiya Janta Party Haryana.
Jats and Jalebis were the two buzzwords in this Haryana election. The Congress placed a large wager on each, but the data suggests that this was not profitable.
In the run-up to the Assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke about the famous jalebis in Gohana, Haryana. The BJP also made fun of his comments, which advocated for the juicy sweet delicacy to be mass-produced and exported.

Jalebis were given out at the Congress office in Delhi this morning as party workers celebrated early after early trends indicated a Congress lead. However, in the subsequent counting rounds, the BJP made a comeback and eventually overtook the main Opposition. It was now time for the ruling party to rejoice. How do they intend to accomplish it? According to party sources, jalebis have been ordered for the lavish celebration that will take place at the BJP headquarters. The BJP is sending the Congress and Mr. Gandhi a very clear political message with their choice of dessert.
Speaking at a rally in Gohana, Mr. Gandhi held up a box of Mathu Ram Halwai’s jalebis and declared that they ought to be sold both domestically and abroad. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha stated that this will lead to an increase in job prospects.
He added that businessmen like Mathu Ram had suffered because of the Center’s demonetisation and GST policies. “20,000–50,000 more people can work in his factory one day if his (Mathu Ram) jalebi is sold in other states and is also exported,” he said.
BJP leaders ridiculed the Congress MP for his comments, claiming he had no idea how the sweet delicacy was made. Ravi Shankar Prasad, a senior BJP politician, stated: “Gohana’s jalebi is also good. Rahul Gandhi is now discussing opening a plant in the United States. However, it’s important to comprehend the production and sales processes for jalebis. If the people who wrote the chit for him had done it correctly, that would have been preferable.” Mr. Gandhi, according to the BJP veteran, “does not do his homework properly”.
