Lohri is a widely observed festival in India, particularly in the northern states, that is primarily observed by Sikhs and Hindus. The celebration marks the beginning of harvest season and the winter crops’ ripening.
In 2024, when is Lohri?
Regarding the date of Lohri, there has been some confusion as to whether it will fall on January 13 or 14. One day prior to Makara Sankranti, the festival is observed. This year, Lohri will be observed on Sunday, January 14, 2024, and Makar Sankranti will be observed on January 15, 2024, according to Drik Panchang.
It is customary to pray to the God of Fire on Lohri, also known as Lohadi or Lal Loi, and request blessings for one’s family and loved ones. The celebration marks the beginning of harvest season and the winter crops’ ripening. Since the days get longer and the nights get shorter after Lohri, the festival also heralded the arrival of warmer winters.
Outside of residences and apartment buildings, bonfires made of wood and cow dung are lit. Around the bonfire, people pray and conduct parikrama. As part of the puja rituals, they also offer gajak, til, gur, and peanuts. The popular folk dance of Punjab, giddha, is performed in many locations to commemorate the festival. Some people also perform Bhangra and dance to dhol beats.
A day after Lohri, Makar Sankranti will be observed. Drik Panchang reports that on January 15, the Sankranti tithi will occur at 2:45 am. The duration of the Makar Sankranti Punya Kala is set to be 10 hours and 31 minutes, starting at 7:15 am and ending at 8:07 pm, while the Makar Sankranti Maha Punya Kala will start at 7:15 am and last for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
