Despite David Alaba’s forced substitution due to a knee injury in the first half, Madrid put on a strong display to defeat Villarreal and go one point ahead of the previous leaders Girona, who play Alaves tomorrow.
Halfway through the first half, Jude Bellingham scored his 17th goal of the year, and Rodrygo doubled their lead with a header from a corner.
Nine minutes after the break, a goal by Jose Luis Morales gave the home team hope, but Brahim Diaz’s incredible solo effort and Luka Modric’s goal four minutes later put an end to the threat of a comeback.
