Today, Israel and the militant organization Hezbollah, which is located in Lebanon, both declared major military campaigns against one another. Hezbollah, an organization supported by Iran, claimed in a statement that “more than 320” Katyusha rockets were fired, with the aim of hitting important Israeli military installations.
The Israeli military launched preemptive strikes on locations in Lebanon in response to the threat. Early on Sunday, the IDF declared these strikes, claiming to have discovered Hezbollah planning “large-scale” operations against Israeli territory. Fighter jets from the Israeli Air Force have been sent in to neutralize these threats, concentrating on Hezbollah installations that presented an immediate threat to civilians in Israel.
Israel claimed that thousands of Hezbollah missile launchers in south Lebanon, targeted at northern and central Israel, were taken down by its fighter jets.
An Israeli military statement stated that “roughly 100 IAF fighter jets… struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels that were located and embedded in southern Lebanon.” “Northern Israel was the target of the majority of these launchers, although others were aimed toward central Israel.
Following weeks of rising tension, Hezbollah and Iran, a regional ally, have pledged to exact revenge for the death of Fuad Shukr, the group’s military commander, last month. The organization has referred to the assault on its leader as an act of war and a clear provocation.
According to the IDF, they have intelligence that Hezbollah is getting ready to launch rockets and missiles into Israeli land.
As part of the first reaction to Shukr’s death, Hezbollah claimed to have “started an air attack with a large number of drones” that was aimed deep inside Israel. Hezbollah also declared that “military operations will take some time to complete” and that it has “a number of enemy positions and barracks and Iron Dome platforms… with a large number of rockets” as its goal.
Today at 0400 GMT, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a meeting of the security cabinet. A statement from Netanyahu’s office states that Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Minister of Defense, has proclaimed a 48-hour nationwide state of emergency. The official phrase for this condition is “special situation on the home front,” which gives the IDF Home Front Command more power to impose limitations.

In response to the heightened hostilities in the area, the US declared that it would “continue to support Israel’s right to self-defense.” US National Security Council Spokesperson Sean Savett said, “Senior US officials have been in constant communication with their Israeli counterparts under President Joe Biden’s request. We will continue to advocate for regional stability and to support Israel’s right to self-defense.”
